James Suckling (left), Ned Goodwin (centre) and Tyson Stelzer (right).

Born in London, raised in Australia and educated in Tokyo and Paris, Goodwin splits his time between Tokyo – where he resided full-time for 14 years – and his beloved Sydney.  Goodwin is a dux of the Len Evans Tutorial, Japan’s first Master of Wine, educator, consultant, judge, critic and a highly regarded motivational speaker and presenter. He consults for select restaurant groups, private clients, lauded Montalcino estate Biondi-Santi and Langton’s, Australia’s premier auction house and purveyor of fine wine. Goodwin also hosts Taste with Langton’s, an interactive YouTube tasting platform for top clients.

From 2001 until November 2012, he served as wine director – educator and buyer – for one of Asia’s largest restaurant groups: Global Dining Japan. In Japan Goodwin was also the ‘wine face’ for All Nippon Airways’ first and business classes, for which he created a bespoke MW Cuvée, a world first, while training a legion of inflight attendants. The airline produced a documentary on Goodwin’s life in wine, viewed by nine million people across the inflight entertainment platform and The Food Network.   During that time Goodwin also hosted Divino Tuscany with James Suckling and musician Sting.

More recently he also took on an Asia-focused ambassadorial role for a champagne house, in addition to founding his own company, Wine Diamonds, a niche importer based in Tokyo.

Goodwin co-writes The Wine Companion as a chief critic and recently served as Bettane et Desseauve critical voice across Antipodean wines for the Chinese market.

Before Japan and from 1998 to 2001 he was one of three sommeliers at Veritas restaurant in Manhattan’s Grammercy neighborhood, and before this at Juveniles in Paris. As a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner and Michelin-hatted restaurant Veritas boasted what was arguably the finest wine list of any restaurant in the world, holding deep reserves of Burgundy, Rhône, Champagne, Bordeaux, Tuscan and Piedmontese wines. Goodwin also worked as a sommelier at Willys in Paris and Michael’s in Los Angeles.

Goodwin had his own Japanese television show on wine – Vintage – (2000), served as guest lecturer on wine marketing at Keio, one of Japan’s most prestigious universities, from 2002 to 2004, hosted wine dinners for winemakers, châteaux owners, Hollywood stars and corporate organisations, while boasting strong traction across media channels, having been featured in the New York TimesDecanterWallpaperThe Japan TimesTokyo CalendarNewsweekElleCNNWine Business InternationalWine and Qantas magazine among other publications.

The Wine List and Menu

On Arrival
Delamotte Blanc de Blancs NV, Our Price $140
This is always an excellent blanc de blancs, with sliced apple, lemon and other citrus fruit, as well as mineral and chalk. It's medium-bodied with lovely density and a fine, creamy texture. Energetic and translucent. 4 years on the yeast and 100% grand cru.
94 Points James Suckling (July 2024)

1st Course
Bass Phillip Premium Chardonnay 2023, Our Price $128
Full, brassy tinted yellow colour. There are oxidative aromas of malt, toast, butter and marzipan. Full bodied and rich, ample and generous, finishing with well-balanced tannin grip. It's big and generous but arguably lacks a little in freshness and brightness. It presents as oxidatively made style, a bit outside the Australian mainstream, more like a Burgundy. The palate has wonderful richness and depth of flavour. Truly impressive.
97 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review (January 2025)
Bass Phillip Premium Chardonnay 2013, Our Price $180
95 Points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

1st Course

2nd Course
Fourrier Bourgogne Blanc 2022, Our Price $128
This white has excellent freshness and density, balanced by salty freshness. Notes of Asian pears, sliced apples and hazelnuts are followed by a compact, medium- to full-bodied palate.
92 Points James Suckling (October 2024)
Fourrier Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 2022, Our Price $675
This Morgeot ‘CM 1M’ Cuvée 2022 from Domaine Vigne Comte de Chapelle, made from Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, has an intense yellow colour. Its bouquet offers a range of fruity summer aromas and subtle floral touches. On the palate, this well-balanced wine reveals delicate flavours of pear, citrus, peach and mango. The fresh, lingering finish envelops the palate and leaves an elegant, harmonious impression, celebrating balance and liveliness.

3rd Course
Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir 2023, Our Price $264
Deep red tinged with bright purple at the rim; a reserved bouquet of dried herbs and dried cherry, still a little in its shell but the magnitude of the flavour and structure is readily apparent. Masses of fine but drying tannins flood the palate. There's a lovely deep core of slightly overripe sweet fruit and the concentration and power of the wine are impressive. It should be cellared a few years to give the bouquet time to develop its full complexity, which it surely will. It's arguably a little overripe—like some Burgundies of recent hot seasons.
95 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review (January 2025)
Fourrier Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 2022, Our Price $458
A spicy and elegant Pommard that exudes aromas of red and green tea, orange rind, spiced cherries and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, silky and complex, with brooding tea and spice character to the ripe red fruit. Powerful. Best after 2025.
95 Points James Suckling (October 2024)

3rd Course

4th Course
Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir 2021, Our Price $1275
Deep-ish ruby with good purple rim and a discreetly foresty, complex bouquet enshrining dried herbs, forest underbrush, some earthy savoury notes. There's dark cherry to plum with hints of fivespice similar to the Premium bottling. The palate is deep and well structured, concentrated and driving. The tannins are insistent and firm, well balanced with the weight and power of the fruit. A majestic wine that will blossom if given more time in bottle. Tremendous length, a lovely deep-set core of sweet fruit, and a satisfyingly climactic finish.
98 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review (July 2023)
Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir 2018, Our Price $1275
Brilliant red. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, star anise, incense and potpourri, along with a smoky mineral overtone. Juicy, lithe and sharply defined on the palate, offering alluringly sweet, mineral- and spice-driven raspberry, cherry cola, candied rose and blood orange flavors that deepen steadily with air while maintaining urgency. Conveys a seductive blend of power and finesse and finishes extremely long and precise, with harmonious tannins and reverberating floral, spice and red fruit notes.
98 Points Josh Raynolds, Vinous (September 2022)
