DOMAINE RAPET PÈRE & FILS

As the Premier & Grand Cru shortages hit home I asked a revered Western Australian Burgundian fanatic if he had any recommendations as to more potential White Burgundy suppliers. He answered immediately “Rapet Pere & Fils”. I had also asked two of my friends in Burgundy for recommendations of quality Domaines that did not have representation in Australia. Both checked with their friends and one came back offering Morey Coffinet & … Rapet Pere & Fils.

About Rapet Pere et Fils:
This historic family estate was created in 1765. Current generation, Vincent heads up the Domaine today, producing modern, well vinified wines- all highly representative of their individual terroirs. A magnificent estate in Pernand-Vergelesses with Vincent Rapet is at the head of this estate, it operates nearly 20 hectares and produces an impressive array of wines from Savigny-lès-Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and of course his home village of Pernand-Vergelesses itself.  Today, 80% of the vines of Domaine Rapet are planted in Pernand-Vergelesses, all displaying the High Environmental Value (HVE) label- one that created by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food in 2012 to certify farms that are far more respectful of the environment by respecting local biodiversity and limiting phytosanitary control.

The Wines, Points, & Reviews

2021 & 2022 White Burgundies

2021 Bourgogne Blanc, Our Price $65
Mid lemon yellow. Quite an intense even exotic nose, with some muscat notes even. Charming in that style, with good natural acidity. Drink from 2024-2026.
85-87 points, Jasper Morris, insideburgundy.com

A cool and distinctly citrusy nose speaks mainly of green apple scents. The racy and delicious flavours possess excellent precision as well as reasonable length on the slightly lean and crisp finale. To enjoy young for its fruit.

2022 Bourgogne Blanc, Our Price $70
Fresh and bright aromas include those of petrol, just sliced apple and pear along with a citrus hint. There is both good volume and richness to the plump and round middle weight flavors that give way to a bitter lemon-inflected and rustic but refreshing finish.

2021 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru 'En Caradeux', Our Price $123
Just one third of a crop overall, nothing in the upper part. Pale colour with a green tint. Raw and slightly backward nose, but plump enough as this end of the vineyard is good white terroir even in the lower part. Nicely balanced finish. Drink from 2025-2028.
88-91 Points Jasper Morris, insideburgundy.com

Pungent aromas of wood toast and moderate reduction given the underlying fruit no chance at present. More interesting are the notably bigger-bodied and more concentrated medium-bodied flavours that flash excellent punch that carries over to the unusually powerful, stony and sneaky long finish. In contrast to the prior wines, all of which could be enjoyed young, this would best be aged for at least a few years first.

2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru 'En Caradeux', Our Price $135
En Caradeaux is on the Savigny side of the commune, and the vines are thus exposed east. In 2022, they produced a delicious wine with lime peel, green apple, minerals, and spice aromas. Dynamic tension on the palate and a pleasantly ripe character to the fruit makes the wine approachable; it should drink well reasonably early. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented on native yeasts with no sulphur before bottling. The wine is ageing now in cask (20% new).

2021 & 2022 Red Burgundies

2021 Bourgogne Rouge, Our Price $65
Not frosted. Fine pale crimson, with a very perfumed floral nose. Very delicious if relatively slight, with fair acidity maintaining freshness. Drink from 2024-2026.
86-87 Points Jasper Morris, insideburgundy.com
A very pinot-like nose combines notes of red cherry with those of earth and a whiff of crushed fennel. The supple, round and delicious middleweight flavours offer good energy that continues onto the mildly austere and rustic finish that leans out slightly as it sits on the palate. To enjoy young for its crunchy fruit and I would suggest serving it with an appropriate dish to round off the finish.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge, Our Price $70
Ultra-fresh aromas of red pinot fruit, spice and more discreet earth nuances lead to equally delicious and more finely textured middleweight flavors that possess notably better volume on the better balanced and sneaky long finish. This is quite good for what it is and worth checking out.

2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru "Aux Fournaux", Our Price $100
This upper part of the vineyard has a shallower soil compared to the village section. A little more colour and definitely more weight of fruit on the nose. Decent fruit, slight iron oxide feel in the blood orange nature, good crisp acidity at the back. Attractive, or will be with a few years in bottle, Drink from 2025-2028.
88-90 Points Jasper Morris, insideburgundy.com

This is aromatically similar to the villages version but with more spice elements in play. There is slightly better volume to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavours that possess more evident power on the moderately austere and firmer finish that is also noticeably more persistent.
91 Points, Burghound.com

2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru "Aux Fournaux", Our Price $113
This is aromatically similar to the villages cuvée of Fourneaux with perhaps slightly more evident wood. There is good power and more volume to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess more size and weight, all wrapped in a mildly more rustic and youthfully austere finish. Drink: 2030+
90 points, Burghound

From the part of this climat classified in premier cru, where the vines are also older and the soils shallower, Rapet's 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fourneaux exhibits aromas of dark berries, cherries, orange zest and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety palate that's suave and lively.

2021 Beaune Premier Cru "Bressandes", Our Price $135

2022 Beaune Premier Cru "Bressandes", Our Price $150
A lovely wine from this stony hillside site, the 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes offers up aromas of red berries, cassis bud and peonies, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and lively palate built around powdery tannins and concluding with a saline, mineral finish.
92 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Here the ripe nose is more deeply pitched with its combination of both plum and red cherry compote where a pretty floral top note can be found. The sleek, detailed and delicious medium-bodied flavors flash focused power on the balanced and lingering finish. Once again, more depth would be helpful but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. Drink: 2030+
90 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Corton Grand Cru, Our Price $269
From the Chaumes & Voierosse vineyard, a site with lots of stones, ripens well, plus some fruit from Les Combes. A little more depth. The nose has a dark fruit to it, and a feeling more backward. They picked the old vines from the early 1960s first and the young vines later. One third new wood may also have an influence. Balanced with a sturdy structure that the level of fruit can carry. Just give this some time. Drink from 2026-2032.
91-93 points, Jasper Morris, insideburgundy.com

This is also cool and airy if more sauvage-inflected with its nose of earth, leather, smoke and a plenitude of floral wisps. There is both fine volume and focused power to the bigger-bodied and muscular flavours that flash fine length on the distinctly austere, tightly wound and very much built-to-age finale. Patience absolutely necessary.
92 points, Burghound.com

2022 Corton Grand Cru, Our Price $290
A more floral if slightly oakier nose reflects layered aromas of black pinot fruit, earth and a pretty array of spice elements. There is again fine volume to the seductively textured and suave medium weight plus flavors that possess an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract on the complex, long and youthfully austere finale. This very firmly structured effort is going to require at least moderate patience. As an aside, I sometimes prefer the Ile de Vergelesses chez Rapet but in 2022, the Corton is clearly the class of the range. Drink: 2034+
93 points, Burghound

Rapet's 2022 Corton Grand Cru delivers aromas of red berries, cherries, vine smoke and orange zest. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and concentrated, with a serious chassis of sweet, chalky tannins and a penetrating finish. It's now Rapet's sole Corton, as the Pougets parcel is being planted over to Chardonnay.
93+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
