About Morey Coffinet:
Founded in the late 1970s by Michel Morey (son of the late Marc Morey) and wife Fabienne (from the Pillot clan). Their son, Thibault took over the helm of the estate in 2009. Thibault joins a long lineage of winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet with great gravitas in their family names such as Pillot, Morey, and Coffinet. In 2014, he began to pursue biodynamic viticulture, gaining certification in 2015. A solid foundation of 1er Crus come from the southeast-facing hillside; the whites reflect the very essence of Chassagne with fragrant aromatics framed around powerful minerality, while the reds hone-in on terroir revealing roasted, muscular aromas while displaying silky texture and balance.

2021 & 2022 White Burgundies
2022 Bourgogne Aligoté (Bio certifié), Our Price $47
The Aligoté vines come from the commune of La Rochepot in the Hautes-Côtes. They are on average 40 years old, have high vines (2m) and have been cultivated/certified organically for almost 15 years. The aging was done entirely in 228L barrels (25% new and 75% one, two and three-year-old barrels) for ten months, then two months in stainless steel vats.
2022 Ladoix (Bio certifié), Our Price $104
From an eastern exposed vineyard at the top of the hillside that is a direct extension of the 1er Cru Les Bréchons. Aged in 350L barrels (30 percent new), then put back into stainless steel tank for another two months. Stony, and stylistically in the Pernand/Corton vineyard veins.
2021 Chassagne-Montrachet (Bio certifié), Our Price $144
In bottle. Pale colour and a lean tight nose but suggesting more fruit to come. There is a light sulphur reduction which will soon blow off. Clean and pure with an energetic thread, correctly oaked behind. Good length to finish. Drink from 2024-2027.

This is also attractively cool and airy with its array of various white orchard fruit, zest and rosemary oil scents. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors exhibit better depth and length on the moderately rustic finale that is notably more tightly wound. This is a good Chassagne villages that should drink well after only a year or two of keeping yet repay 5 to 8.

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet (Bio certifié), Our Price $144
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a blend of three parcels, has a taut and focused bouquet, reserved initially, unfolding with wilted white flowers and light waxy aromas. Quite understated. The palate is well-balanced with neatly assimilated oak, orange rind and slivers of white peach, leading to a waxy-textured, satisfying finish. This is a well-crafted and quite delicious Chassagne-Montrachet.

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Houillères" (Bio certifié), Our Price $166
Made from one old vine section and one recent planting. Not bottled and showing the barrel a little bit much at the moment, along with some reduction. There is a greater wealth of fruit here, fresh plum with a touch of citrus, and a little more flesh at the back, with the oak now completely tamed. Drink from 2024-2028.

This also reflects a smoky component on the aromas of petrol, crushed anise and white peach. Once again there is fine volume and richness to the unusually powerful larger-bodied flavors that display very fine length and persistence on the bitter zest-inflected finish. This isn't refined but it offers solid quality for a villages Chassagne and is worth considering.

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Houillères" (Bio certifié), Our Price $166
Mid lemon yellow. The nose has a little bit more reductive tension than the straight Chassagne, with fresh golden orchard fruit, a generous weight behind, ripe apples, good acidity nicely folded in and excellent length. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

A discreet application of wood can be found on the freshly sliced aromas of pear, apple and more prominent floral scents. There is better density to the sappy and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while exhibiting good length on the balanced finish. This isn't quite as tightly wound as the straight Chassagne though it is more generous.

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "En Cailleret "(Bio certifié), Our Price $234
A fine pale colour. A light stoniness but there is plenty of fruit too. Richer and deeper fruit on the attack, but Cailleret cannot escape its destiny and the stonier side of the fruit returns behind. Just enough flesh on the bones. Drink from 2026-2030.

A spicier nose freely reveals its aromas of both white and yellow peach and a whiff of jasmine tea. Here too there is very good mid-palate density to the medium weight flavors that aren't quite as powerful though they are finer and more mineral-driven as well on the youthfully austere, more complex and slightly more persistent finish. Lovely and I especially like the balance that should permit this to age gracefully over the next decade.

A faint lime green touch in the colour. The bouquet has a chiselled mineral quality, along with a touch of positive reduction as well. Strict on the limestone with an excellent intensity without any heaviness, perfectly judged. Delicately ripe finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

A mild suggestion of the exotic can be found on the aromas of white peach, wet stone, honeysuckle and a hint of spice. There is better underlying tension to the more detailed and markedly more mineral-driven flavors that are quite sleek before culminating in a sneaky long, balanced and dry-in-the-best sense finale. Lovely and one to consider.

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Romanée" (Bio certifié), Our Price $261
5 barrels made from one hectare. Another very pale colour. La Romanée delivers both the most tension and the most flesh on the nose. Still in the fresh white fruit vein. This shows its class on the palate but never fills out in explosive style. Builds slowly on the palate, ripe lemons to finish. Drink from 2026-2030.

This also possesses an expressive nose that is both slightly more elegant and more complex with its pretty array of pure citrus, acacia blossom, apple, pear and exotic tea scents. There is excellent volume but also a satisfying underlying tension to the medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of detail on the refined, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This beauty of a La Romanée will need a few years to further develop depth, but the underlying material appears to be more than adequate to do so. Strongly worth considering.

Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet shows an extra degree of ripe fruit, and a little less the limestone freshness of Caillerets. This is more backward, with an additional intensity, significantly so. Grows across the palate, still fresh limestone to finish, but with an extra éclat. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

Here too there is the barest suggestion of the exotic lurking in the background of more floral-suffused aromas of Granny Smith apple, spice and a similar hint of wet stone. The middleweight flavors are not as concentrated but they are noticeably finer, particularly on the overtly stony, chiseled, youthfully austere and superbly long finale. This excellent effort will also need to develop more depth but that should merely be a matter of exercising a bit of patience.

Pale colour, fine energy, really chiselled, electric backbone, a burst of flavour and indeed some riper floral notes to finish, before some lemon scented oak at the very back. Possibly the faintest touch of something rather exotic to finish. Drink from 2026-2030.

More appealing are the gorgeously textured and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also buffers the moderately tightly wound finish where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. This pretty effort could use better depth but a few years of bottle aging should be helpful.

2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" (Bio certifié), Our Price $408
Elegant and pure aromas are comprised by notes of honeysuckle, carnation, acacia, lilac, spice and citrus confit. The rich, caressing and suave medium weight flavors are also blessed with plenty of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a lingering, firm and equally serious finale. This is both classier and finer than the Blanchot but can't match it for sheer size, weight and power.

2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Bio certifié), Our Price $1056
One again there is a smoky component to the nose of acacia, lilac, rose petal, citrus and a hint of sandalwood. The racy, precise and beautifully sleek middleweight flavors are not quite as concentrated though they do display focused power on the lemony and saliva-inducing finish that delivers first-rate depth and persistence. This tightly coiled effort should amply repay extended keeping yet isn't so compact that it couldn't be enjoyed after 5-ish or so years.

Terrific energy here in this wine which pays homage to Thibault’s late grandfather, Fernand Coffinet. Pale lemon and lime. A brilliant energy to the nose, chapeau. There is the purest of white fruit filling the palate and excellent structure behind. Made with a sensitivity that does not impact on intensity. Superb balance and does everything as it should, and then some! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

In bottle. A plot of one hectare half in each colour. A fine glowing crimson purple with an elegant and quite forceful fruit, red berries from cherry to raspberry. All destemmed. Charm on the palate right from the start with a balanced structure to finish. Drink from 2025-2028.

60 year old vines, converted from cordon to guyot training for more finesse. A vigorous mid purple, with a concentration of dark red fruit on the nose. Fills out very nicely behind, generous and with a quality red fruit without rude tannins. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Slightly riper aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, dark raspberry, pepper and a pretty floral hint that are trimmed in subtle wood influence. There is fine volume, detail and underlying tension to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the dusty and chalky finish that displays a bit more rusticity. While qualitatively similar to the Les Chambres, these offer two quite different expressions.

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot (Bio certifié), Our Price $172
From Francemont, close to the border with Santenay. A little more depth of colour and nearly as delicious a nose as the Clos St-Jean. This is still a fine rather than a muscular Morgeot, on the raspberry side. On the palate the Morgeot character does assert itself with muscular tannins. Needs longer than Clos St-Jean, and while it will never be as elegant there is good potential here. Drink from 2026-2032.

A discreet application of wood sets off aromas of olive oil and a vague suggestion of the exotic. There is impressive richness to the opulent and generous medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent length on the compact, serious and powerful finish. This is a typical Morgeot of power and richness though without the usual rusticity
