Talijancich History

The 1920’s saw my late grandparents leave their families behind in what was Yugoslavia, arriving in Fremantle with no family or close friends to greet them. Some getting work in the timber mills of our Southwest, and others to Kalgoorlie. Eventually, it was the Swan Valley where they would settle with a new family and build life-long friendships with the people of the region. Vineyards and wine seemed to be in their blood.

My grandmother from my mother’s side (Rosich) moved from Kalgoorlie to purchase a property in the Swan along West Swan Road, which they named Albion Wines. After selling the property in the early 1940’s, my grandfather Jack Hrabar, married Nellie Rosich, and took over the name Albion. They continued with their own vineyard including winemaking and a cooperage with Jack travelling by horse and cart to New Norcia to make barrels for the monastery’s winery during the off-season.

The memories for me and my sisters will always remain clear and strong. Being around people who were humble and hardworking. Their persistence and dedication paved the way for future landowners to build on.

As we celebrate 90 years of winemaking and my father Peter’s 90th birthday we look back with great admiration of our family members who sacrificed so much for what they hoped was going to be a better life, and it was. All our family now - as big as it is - are all so proud of our late grandparents and of my parents for what they have achieved.

Talijancich Today

James and Hilda Talijancich purchased the winery and vineyard and moved into the winery homestead with their four children in 1998.

Since that period they have followed the bio-dynamic approach to viticulture, which is the strictest form of organic growing developed by Rudolph Steiner.

Talijancich Wines remains one of the few producers in the region that focuses on wines made solely from Swan Valley fruit, with the majority of their wines being estate grown.

The Wine List

1st Course
Semillon 2024
This unique variety in the Swan Valley brings through flavours of citrus and grapefruit developing additional texture from partial barrel fermentation and yeast lees aging. A Semillon of great character that can be enjoyed young or be rewarded for its cellaring potential.

2nd Course
Verdelho 2024 (New Release)
and creamy texture that will live on to at least 2040.
Talijancich Wines
Verdelho 2001, Sold Out
Seared salmon, salsa verde

3rd Course
2024 Old Vine Reserve Shiraz
Produced from our 1932 plantings, this is a wine that is literally made by hand. We have done away with our usual old techniques and let the fruit do the talking. Low crop levels from old vines are picked at 3 stages and blended to have extraordinary and complex results. Matured in large old French oak 2000 litre cuves, oak is not evident but importantly the primary fruit and subtlety make our Shiraz unique in so many ways.
Winery Notes

4th Course
10 year old white liquor Verdelho
If there was one word that summed up the art of fortified wine it would have to be ‘blending’. In this case, the blending of varieties and the blending of individual vintages from 1969. This White Liqueur is a blend of Pedro Ximenes and Verdelho picked at the semi-raisin stage. The 3 varieties are hand-picked and processed separately and allowed to clarify for 12 months prior to blending and ageing in small old oak casks.

5th Course
Liqueur Muscat 1983 Solero Blend No. 1
The Gordo Blanco Muscat variety is recognised as one of the oldest grape varieties in the world and is known for producing the finest fortified wines. My father, Peter, had the opportunity to purchase a small quantity of this variety in 1961 and would go on to produce our most prized and sought-after fortified wine - the Reserve Muscat 1961 Solero. The last vintage of Muscat that he and I produced together was in 1983. In recent years we were fortunate to find a small vineyard of Gordo Blanco Muscat in the swan Valley. It was exceptional quality, and I knew that blending it with our remaining 1983 Muscat was going to produce an extraordinary wine.
Julian James Liqueur Shiraz 1981 Solero Blend No. 3
- Winestate Magazine Top 5 Fortified Wine of the Year 2019.
– Gold Swan Valley Wine Show 2019
- Gold Swan Valley Wine Show 2020

This old blend has prune and blackberry jam, dark chocolate, spice and sweet spirit on the nose. It tastes sweet and luscious with some attractive brandy-like spirit overtones, finishing with melting tannins and a lingering sweet aftertaste.
