Marchand and Burch

History: When Two Men Met in Bourgogne

Jeff Burch first crossed paths with Pascal Marchand in the cellars of Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard and a fast friendship quickly formed, a passion for Pinot Noir as its foundation. Two decades on, this friendship and passion formed the foundation for Marchand & Burch. Since 2007, the collaboration has evolved, weaving a narrative that spans Western Australia’s Great Southern and Bourgogne, France.

Guided by the belief that fine wines should echo their unique origins, Jeff and Pascal championed the concept of ‘terroir.’ The Marchand and Burch journey began at the Mount Barrow vineyard in Great Southern, a region specially selected for its ancient geology, continental climate and cooling ocean influence, giving rise to the distinctive and expressive ‘New World’ terroir at the heart of the Australian Collection.

The French Collection was established in 2007, allowing wine enthusiasts to explore the iconic epicentre of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Bourgogne. While the French wines of Bourgogne delve into centuries-old tradition, the South West Australian wines showcase the region’s untapped viticultural potential, proving that an emphasis on terroir can produce exceptional wines from WA. Explore the unique imprint of place woven into each bottle of Marchand and Burch wine, bridging the gap between the wild and remote landscape of Great Southern and the time-honoured terroir of Bourgogne.

  • The French Collection is a realisation of the long-term ambition of Jeff and Pascal to collaborate in a meaningful way to bring wines from the great vineyards of the Côte d’Or and beyond to Australia. Since the first vintage was released in 2007 the range has expanded as Pascal’s holdings of vines in Bourgogne have increased. He now owns 8 hectares of Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations, as well as continuing to source fruit from a trusted network of family growers.

Bourgogne stands as a cornerstone of the French fine wine world, producing unparalleled and exemplary expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Long rooted in this historic wine landscape, these grape varieties share an inseparable bond with the hallowed region. It was here that the profound concept of ‘terroir’ was born—a belief that fine wine carries the unmistakable mark of their vineyards. In this iconic epicentre of fine French wine, winemakers are viewed as custodians, skillfully translating the language of soil, season, and site into a unique sensory experience in every glass.

  • The heart of the Marchand & Burch Australian collection is the estate Mount Barrow Vineyard, planted by the Burch Family in 2005 and much admired by Pascal Marchand on his visit to Western Australia the following year. The vineyard faces south to the formidable Southern Ocean, its unique microclimate meets an ancient geology where gravel and granite combine to test the resilience of the maturing vines. It is this struggle that gives expression and character in the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that speaks solely of this environment and nowhere else.

The Australian collection now comprises five wines: the Villages wines are exuberant, varietal and ready to drink. The Villages Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are crafted from the younger vines at the bottom of the Mount Barrow vineyard and are matured in tanks and larger format old oak barrels to emphasise vibrancy and fruit freshness. The Villages Rosé is an homage to the Provençal style and uses Pinot Noir and old vine Grenache to convey the delicate, alluring, spicy and mineral characteristics that make these wines so unashamedly enjoyable.

2023 Marchand & Burch Mount Barker Chardonnay,
Our Special Price $88
Gold Medal – Wine Show of WA
Strikes immediately with complex and intriguing notes of faint struck match against a background of grapefruit, vanilla bean and tart nectarine. The palate texture has been created with a mix of oaks of different ages and formats with partial malolactic fermentation. Has a subtle cracked seas-shell character permeating against the dry savoury minerality. Shows the virtues of the Mount Barrow vineyard with its mix of clones adding variety and complex options to the wines.

2022 Marchand & Burch Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru, Our Special Price $134
Mid-depth bright yellow hue, with very shy, reserved bouquet that shows straw, almond/nutty and dried-herb inflexions. The wine is very reserved and delicate in the mouth, light-weight really, with modest palate length. The balance and drinkability are very appealing.

2023 Marchand & Burch Mount Barrow Pinot Noir, Our Special Price $65
Trophy – Best Great Southern Pinot Noir – Australian Pinot Noir Challenge
This is such a brilliant pinot with the structure, the prettiness and the palate feel you seek with this variety. Pretty it might be, but this has a tight structural core guiding it. The fragrances are all cherry and roses. The palate is deceptively powerful, almost belying its light colour. A tight thread of fine tannins weaves through supporting the intense red fruits. This is a high-class wine showing just how good this region is.

Deep, brooding colour; the bouquet is intense in smoky/charcoal/burnt timber aromas, barbecued meats as well; the wine is full-bodied and quite concentrated, deep and authoritative with masses of tannin and good impact. Light purple-crimson; both the bouquet and palate have the racy characters of almost all the Vosne-Romanee pinots that becomes even more obvious with Premier and Grand Crus; lingering tannins extend the finish and aftertaste.

Bright and expressive, with floral aromatics layered over raspberry, plum, and a hint of white strawberry.
